Skier killed: Canadian officials working to recover body
A skier was killed in British Columbia on Friday after a group of skiers was caught in an avalanche near a mountain ski resort, according to a Feb. 22 Reuters report. Canadian authorities said the group was in an out-of-bounds area near the ski resort.
Canada’s CTV news reported on its website that the dead skier was in a group of five or six men who were skiing on the back side of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort, which is located in the southeastern part of the Canadian province.
According to the Canadian Press, RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Friday the group was skiing in an out-of-bounds area a distance from the resort in the Greely Lake area when the avalanche came down earlier in the day. “A number of the group were able to get out to summon further help and are speaking with RCMP investigators and search and rescue,” he said.
Three skiers were buried in the avalanche outside the controlled area boundaries of the resort. Moskaluk said other members of the group were able to rescue two of the three people involved, but the third person was found dead. “I don’t know what equipment they were equipped with, but they did self-rescue,” Moskaluk said, adding that police and rescue officials expected to recover the body on Saturday.
The victim was not immediately identified by police. In a move implying that natural avalanches as well as human-triggered avalanches are very likely, the Canadian Avalanche Center upgraded the risk of sliding to “high” in alpine and tree line mountain regions throughout most of British Columbia on Friday.
